A simple alternative:
Host the file/directory on another partition that has the space you need,
and symlink it to /var somewhere... or do a 'mount -o bind' if symlinking
doesn't work for some reason.
I used to do this for ridiculously large ebuilds on gentoo, although there
are some variables I could have set in /etc/make.conf that would have
changed the location... the 'mount -o bind' worked fine, though.
