My only complaint about Gentoo and HAL was that it was a bit sudden.
There was very little warning that after installing the upgrade your X
will probably not work anymore though the problem will probably be easy
to deal with.

On my Eee I did have to modify the HAL settings for the touchpad to make
it work decently (no evil tap clicking, two finger scrolling at a usable
speed).  The HAL config files are a bit uglier than the xorg.conf file
but it is so nice that X will now just work most of the time without
config.  It may not work optimally or the way you want it but it will at
least work.  That is very helpful when you need to hit Google to figure
out how to configure it.
