Can you provide more information like the rsync command line and the errors?

If the device you were trying to rsync to was not mounted then the files
probably went into the directory where the device would normally be
mounted.  It is possible to put stuff into an unmounted mount point and
it is possible to mount something on top of a directory with stuff in it.
