I've been way outta-the-loop on this, but I didn't realize people
have been using UCARP on Linux for some time now:  
  http://www.ucarp.org/project/ucarp  

That includes with connection-track/conntrackd so existing connections
can fail over from one firewall to another, even active-active setups.
