[Leaplist] rsync shell script for mac

Hey guys,
My sister was just complaining the other day that it would be tragic
if any of the work she had done with her mac was lost. I managed to
find the terminal program, and used rsync to save files to an external
drive.
So I have two or three questions. What are mac osx files that should be
excluded (put into an "exclude.txt")? Also, what should a shell
script for a mac look like? Where is bash? is there a "~/bin/"
equivalent?
I'd also like to have a link to the script on the desktop and/or have
it called by cron. Mac does have cron, doesn't it?
thanks.
