That is not the problem at hand but it is a problem that I overlooked.
The fix is to run:
smartctl -s on /dev/sd?
You can put that in a startup script if the drives refuse to remember it.
If your smartctl is old (I don't know your distro) then you may need to use:
smartctl -d ata -s on
instead.
