Here are the problems with not having a secondary:
1) Your backup server suffers an irretrievable disk crash. Since I'm sure you
raided your server to the max, this isn't a problem for you.
2) A robber breaks into your house and steals everything, including your
backup server. It would be nice to have an offsite backup.
3) A hurricane blows your house down. It would be nice to have an offsite
backup. Also, if you have to evacuate and have little room in your car or
motorcycle, you can simply grab your backup hard disk or backup DVDs, pocket
them, and hit the road. This actually happened to me January 17, 1994, when my
family and I lived in Reseda, California
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994_Northridge_earthquake). I grabbed my backup
tapes, wife and 8 month old triplets and headed north until the shaking
stopped 200 miles from LA. The Red Cross classified our neighborhood as
"destroyed." We were 6 city blocks from the epicenter.
Turns out I didn't need the tapes -- my Gateway Computer took a licking and
kept on ticking.
