A current 1U server should handle several dozen hardphones; in other  
words, whatever you care to throw a PBX on should be more than  
sufficient for a household.

http://nerdvittles.com/ is a good website to go to for information on  
running a Linux-based PBX. Basic outline: take a random box, download  
install CD, boot the CD, and you have a PBX with voice mail, auto- 
attendant, queueing, a web interface, and lots of other goodies.

I generally buy my VoIP equipment from voipsupply.com, FWIW. They've  
got both Siemens (preorder?) and Snom DECT-based SIP phones as well as  
the more conventional hardwired variety from the usual suspects  
(Aastra, Polycom, Cisco...)
