I know a great number of you self-assemble desktops. Right now DDR2 memory
is the cheapest and most common, making 4GiB easily achievable for a few bucks,
and AMD Socket-AM2+ boards are some of the cheapest.

NewEgg has an ECS Socket-AM2+ with the low-power AMD 740G (integrated
ATI Radeon 2100, basically the same as the 690G only a 55nm die-shrink) for
$45 - $20 rebate. The Socket-AM2+ supports the new 45nm Athlon II X4, which
is a new quad core processor retailing at $99 (basically the Phenom without L3
cache, reducing the transistor count 2-3x), and excellent at multitaking as well
as well multi-threaded titles.

Just FYI for those interested ...

I fully assume an onslaught of comments about AMD, ATI, ECS, etc... will follow.
