I hadn't realized my 8 port was a 7500-8.  It seems to work fine.

6xxx cards don't seem to reliably work in newer systems, where newer in 
my experience seems to be anything after 2002 or 2003.  I'd used a 6200 
and a 6410 successfully in an old slot 1 based P3 board and a AMD K6(ii) 
400MHz based system.

Nothing newer so far has worked.  My K7S5A has a known issue with 3Ware 
cards, so I thought it was just that ~ 2003/2004 board, but this Biostar 
   board is a newer socket 754 based board from 2005.

Ugh, now I have a lvm2 vg name collision though.
