I have a thumb drive packed full of antivirus, antispyware, antimalware..
isn't it ridiculous the amount of 3rd party tools it takes to maintain a MS os?
It's like owning an Opel (Cadillac Caterra)--which I never have, nor
would ever want to.
Forget using the Norton suite of products. They ceased being useful
after selling out to Symantec.
I have had to clean MANY computers that were 'protected' by up-to-date
versions of Norton antivirus.
There are so many in-the-wild viruses that they cannot detect (even 12
year old ones like Romeo and Juliet)
If you are gonna pay for a product, get NOD32 (or even panda,
pccillin, avast...ANYONE but norton)
My most-used utilz:
-AVG free antivirus
-Malwarebytes antimalware
-HiJackThis! (which now has to be installed --not just executed after
they were bought out)
-Spybot Search & Destroy (with TeaTimer enabled)
-Avast! antivirus (30 day demo)
But you should NEVER trust a compromised machine. Just get it running
enough to grab data and then format.
(besides, system will run better with a fresh oS install)
I frequently disinfect PC's that run WindowsXP.
Oftentimes, NONE of the above detect it.
It is pretty easy to spot rogue dll's and files scattered through
%windir%/system32.
After removing those, then AVG magically starts finding things.
Root kits, however, cannot be seen with naked eye (and also avoid detection).
Hence, never trust those tools to give you a clean bill of health.
