If none of the browsers will connect, but you can ping out to the Web
and you have no DNS issues, then you might need to run a Winsock
repair tool available from microsoft. I have run into this issue and
the tool has repaired the problem more often than not. This will get
the laptops up and running in a short period of time.
However, that being said, I have installed Linux Mint 7 on my personal
laptop, and I couldn't be happier. I was running Linux Mint 5 that had
been upgraded from 4, and 7 is quite an upgrade. This time I backed up
my settings and performed a clean install. Mint 7 is a little quicker
(bootup, software loading, and software updates) and a little
smoother. They have redesigned the layout of the Control Center; that
is not a bad thing, just took a little getting used to. Plus, if you
would like a little bit of eye candy, but not the full blown show,
they have both the full Compiz Manager and a Simple Compiz Manager to
add whatever you want. I like running Compiz because when visiting
clients, I can show them that you can have all of the bells and
whistles of vista without the harsh system requirements. This time I
am running much less eye candy than before and getting the same results.
My laptop has the Broadcom wifi chipset, and Mint found and installed
the drivers once I said it was OK. Plus, the Network Manager never
worked right before, and it does under Mint 7. Additionally, my
software updated never worked under 4, and the update to 5 didn't fix it.
I like Mint 7, and I think it would be a wise choice for the school
laptops.
