Actually, you can convert PDF into text, as long as the elements
of the PDF were text in the first place.  There are several converters
out there, some even can recognize the rich markup of select,
generating programs too.

But yes, there is _no_excuse_ why they don't have an ODF importers
(or even DOCX for that matter).  They are XML formats.  In ODF's case,
it is just a zip file with separate content from style documents, so it's
even easier.

and they ask because their software knows how to read a word doc and pull out phrases like "system administrator" or "SQL". they can't do that with a PDF... although truth be told they probably could, if the PDF contained text, however so many scanning programs out there will "scan to PDF", there's no guarantee that any given PDF will be readable- many PDF files contain images rather than text, and trying to explain the difference to most people is more hassle than it's worth. when people see "PDF file", they don't understand that it's a generic container format which may contain any combination of text, images, sounds, animations, and other objects.
