looking at their web site, the first thing which grabs my eye is the
phrase "Yahoo! Zimbra".
i don't trust yahoo, any more than i trust microsoft, verisign, or
(pick any bank.) my worry is that by using the software, the license
agreement gives yahoo access to the data, or the software sends copies
of the data to yahoo for indexing (i.e. "to help you find your data
faster", or some other marketing euphemism for "we get to mine your
data for marketing purposes") or you're agreeing to allow them to add
their own footers to the bottom of every message, like the yahoo
webmail interface does...
and reading through their "yahoo public license"...
http://www.zimbra.com/license/yahoo_public_license_1.1.html
look at section 3.2. basically it says you are not allowed to remove
any of yahoo's branding or advertising from the product.
if this were for myself, that would be a deal-killer. and while i
don't know how the client is going to react, i will point this out to
them. who knows, they may not care one way or the other.
for what it's worth, i've also looked at a few other products' web
pages, but haven't had time to really evaluate any of them.
- a few years ago, somebody came to a LEAP meeting and did a
presentation on "scalix". it seems like a commercial product, but they
have a free version with source code available. unfortunately it's
based on sendmail rather than a more modern MTA (i.e. qmail, postfix,
or exim.)
- i looked at "kolab server", which is free. i'm not sure of the exact
details, but it seems to be somehow tied to KDE, or kmail, or kdepim,
or something like that.
- i found something called "citadel", which is not only free, it's
GPL. however, it seems to be structured like an old-school BBS system
with the internet services (SMTP, IMAP, etc.) tacked on as an
afterthought. i honestly don't know what to make of it.
i'll be looking through some of the links others have suggested in
this thread in the morning.
