If they have Windows servers, is it safe to assume Windows client PC's
(would be weird to have Linux, solaris and OSX workstations with a Windows
server!)
Something I have done for Not-for-profits (who insist on Windows clients) is
to:
1. stop hosting email onsite. (because they have limited bandwidth and
cannot manage SPAM well
2. switch to the free gmail hosted email (and use IMAP or pop to access).
3. Use Thunderbird (mozilla email) on the windows clients.
There is a Calendar addon (lightning).
There is a plugin for the calendar addon that connects to Google
calendar.
VERY easy to use and configure.
I have the CEO of the women's shelter synching her WindowsMobile cellphone
through activesync Thunderbird that automatically syncs with the assistant's
calendar through the 'net.
So easy, a CAVEMAN can do it (no offense, Phil).

I have deployed a number of SME linux boxes to organizations that want the
security/flexibility of an inhouse easy-to-use Linux server. All of these
services are preconfigured:
-email (pops,imaps,webmail--which also has calendar through web)
-LDAP
-file server
-user/group manager that acts as Domain Controller
-proxy server
-VPN
-LAMP web server
