David, Thanks for replying. i think I did a bad job of explaining the
problem and also I have rebooted to see if it messed up again but it
rebooted fine so whatever happened there seems to no longer be a problem.

But to your statement and a more accurate explanation. Everything is
just fine all thru bootup(pre X) and during login and using X .... I
CAN use the terminal/command line in the GUI/X mode. You know, where
there is a "Terminal" icon that is on the desktop and or
Taskbar/Panel. YOu know, it pops up in a window and has all teh window
menu stuff with it. That works fine as does everything else in X.

The Problem comes when I try to do the "Cntrl Alt F1-F6" AND at
reboot/shutdown AFTER X is closed and the system goes to Terminal mode
to echo shutdown progress to the screen. I get no echo. just a black
screen and the "out of range" message from the monitor. I get that from
both the CAF1-6 and again, at shutdown/reboot. I think of that as VT100
mode/Virtual Terminal because it looks like what I remember the old
terminals looked like. I don't know really what it's called in
reality. But anyway, that is where I'm having my problem.]

It seems like there is a call to change the monitor settings for some
reason when going into that mode and i don't know where to tweak them
so the system no longer goes "out fo range" for the monoitor. Again,
it's jus fine at bootup(pre X) but then for some reason it all changes
after X and I then try to access that mode and after X closes. Note
that when I do a Cntrl Alt F1-F6 and get the black screen, I CAN do a
Cntrl Alt F7 and get back to X just fine. No problemo' there. It just
doesn't like the VT mode.

i CAN get by w/o using the VT"CntrlAlt F1-F6" mode but I don't like the
idea of not being able to see the shutdown echo in case there are system
problems and or errmor messages i need to see at shutdown/reboot.

Sorry for the bad explanation previously...

Re nvidia. It is an ATI graphics situation, not nvidia. But I had
looked at the installed drivers using Synaptic and was astounded at all
the drivers that the "install" did install on the system. And I think
it's installed all the ATI drivers that it had in it's database for the
AMD64 install. ATI and more... I think it also included nvidia too.

I checked to see if there is an ati-xconfig file but could not find
anything. There also seems not to be a nvidia-xconfig flie on my system
either.

Oh well. I'll keep googling but am at a loss right now. Thanks again
for the reply. Much appreciated.
