that's not strange...actually -
that's to be expected.  Because what's happening in boot-up is
'pre-X'.....then all of your changes/mess-up are 'post X'.....so the
problem is your X configuration.

Are you doing something like CTRL-ALT-F1
to change to the different what you're calling 'terminal screens'? 
or are you just running the terminal program within X?

If you
can get to something like 'CTRL-ALT-F1' or other screen like F2, F3 
(not F7 or F8)....then do this:

init 3   (this should
take you out of X and drop you into a runlevel 3 environment - i.e. NO
x)

nvidia-xconfig  (will probably need to run this as root
or sudo)  <--if you have a NVIDIA card (not sure that it is for
ATI based cards - could probably Google for 'ati x config setup')
