All mail hosts try to deliver mail for 7 days (by default) and then give 
up and send it back to the sender.

Each mail host does this a different way, but it's something like. Try 
in half hour. Try again in one hour. Try again in 3 hours. Try again in 
6 hours. Try again in 12 hours. Try each day for several days. I can't 
tell you the specifics but that's the idea.
