And not being Kevin, I've never had these problems with VLC. Sure, it
doesn't work 100% of the time (the same way every *nix media player
doesn't work 100% of the time, because they all use a different back-end
and/or configuration mechanism), but for all normal usage it works just
fine. I've mainly used it on Linux and OSX (where Quicktime has crap for
codec support). Of course I don't use Gentoo, so it was probably compiled
with a tested and known-working set of options.
Speaking of dumping core, the only media player that I've had enough
consistant issues with over the year has been Xine. But its been many
years since I've bothered trying Xine for anything anyways.
The only real issues I've ever had with VLC are with its UI, and those
issues are just because whoever wrote it assumed there were only two
serious use cases: streaming media, and playlist-loading. Of course its
getting better in recent versions.
