A 1994 Egghead Software advertisement stated a sale price of $795.00 on a 1000
Megabyte (1GB) Western Digital disk drive. Heart pounding, praying it wasn't
a misprint, I called them up, and in my most casual voice asked if they had
any of those eight hundred buck 1000 Megabyte hard disks in stock. They said
they did.

Hopping in the car, I broke every speed law getting to Egghead. After a quick
1 minute mantra meditation in the car, I walked in cool as a cucumber and
asked for an eight hundred buck 1000 Megabyte WD drive. They handed it to me,
I handed them my credit card, and prayed they wouldn't stop in the middle and
say "Oh, we're sorry, it's really eightEEN hundred, not eight hundred."

But the transaction went through. Rather than continuing looking around in the
store, as was my habit. I politely thanked them and strode briskly, but in
control, out of the store. I didn't want to give them an opportunity to
revoke the transaction. I carefully drove 2 blocks away where they couldn't
hear me, got out of the car, gave a whoop of delight and did a victory dance.

Three years later I was buying drives 6 times bigger for 1/3 the price.
