I've never used the Ubuntu USB imagewriter, but here's what I do....

>From a working system do this:

sudo dd if=Ubuntu-9.04-netbook-remix-i386.img of=/dev/sdx bs=1M

Make sure the USB is bigger than the image file and /dev/sdx must be the
name of your USB flash drive.  If you don't know what the device name of the
flash drive is, do this:

sudo fdisk -l

Look for the device that is the same size as the USB drive and make sure you
do not overwrite the wrong device!

After you get it installed, I highly recommend checking out
http://array.org/ubuntu/.  They have some great custom kernels and tweaks to
improve performance and battery life.
