Ram, 

I am pretty sure that something happened during an upgrade that you
previously attempted so the .deb file that apt is wanting to install is
corrupt. I found this documentation that puts it into much easier words
than what I could try to explain.

If the above fix doesn't work for you, I believe you could also run the
following command with sudo:

rm /var/cache/apt/archives/linux-image-2.6.24-24-server_2.6.24-24.55_i386.deb
