You might want to take a look at some of the existing scripts for  
doing backups.  Go to freshmeat.net and search for "mysql backup" and  
you will find several options.  The one that I have my eye on for the  
next time I have to backup MySQL databases is http://pol.spurious.biz/ 
projects/scripting/mysqlblasy.php
