What distro of Linux?

Did you apt-get install in the CLI, or, did you use synaptic?

Basically, you got a corrupted download tarfile, and it probably was 
what we  call a "linehit" that corrupted one bit or more, in the 
download.  How is your power there?  Here, in Florida,  the typical 24 
hour monitoring of any power outlet shows about 17,000 voltage spikes 
per hour, exceeding 3500 Volts!

Those spikes can affect Power Supplies over time, and it is really a 
wonder that equipment doesn't fail more than it does.
I really like power conditioning, but it is not cheap.

The "Linehits" can be lightning strikes, and other spikes, (neighborhood 
cable TVs that are going bad), that arrive on the cable system, despite 
the best attempts to filter them out.

Try loading it again.
