Ray, this isn't responsive to your question, but have you ever considered 
using gnumeric? I use gnumeric all the time and love it.

Whether text documents, presentations, or spreadsheets, I've always had 
trouble with OO. I'm not saying OO's defective -- maybe it's just defective 
user, but I always use LyX instead of OO Writer, and gnumeric instead of OO 
spreadsheet.
