First off, it helps to be specific in the case of OOo.
Do you mean the Calc spreadsheet? (I assume so).
Secondly, set your formatting on the cell. This is no different
than Lotus 1-2-3, MS Excel or Borland/Corel Quattro.
Third, set your defaults to not try to interpret values by default.
Have it assume literals by default instead. This, again, is no
different than any other spreadsheet.
NOTE: It sounds like your spreadsheet may already have
formatting applied to the cells you're entering data in. Where
did you get your spreadsheet from?
Did you create a new one? If so, change cell defaults and
apply differences as needed.
If not, and you reused an existing, inspect cells for applied
formatting. That's likely your issue.
This isn't OOo at all. ;)
