If you get static IP (virtual office) service from Bright House they have
a similar setup. The cable modem is actually a 4-port router. If you
connect a computer to it and DHCP you will get a 192.168.1.0/24 IP and NAT
through the modem on 1 static IP. However, the static IP you bought is
supposed to be assigned to a particular computer. The computer you want
to have that IP you set to that IP static and it just works and is a
different real IP than the one used for NAT.

My setup is to connect my router to theirs and put the real IP on it. My
router then connects to my switch from a second ethernet interface and
routes traffic. If my router is down I *can* connect a computer directly
to the cable modem and DHCP a private IP if I need to. Whenever I am
working on my router or my server that my router boots from and therefore
relies on I plug my laptop into the cable modem just in case I need to
Google some problem related to whatever reason I have my normal
infrastructure down.
