I recently purchased a Fujitsu ScanSnap 1500, and have been very pleased 
with it. One pass 2-sided scan, more than sufficient resolution for 
normal activities, and so far not a single feed jam that it hasn't detected.

$405 delivered from Newegg, but with All-in-Ones starting under $35, you 
might want to look at one as a supplement to your laser printer, 
especially if you don't need 2-sided scanning or automatic feed.

For very simple needs, I have a SCSI flatbed I could let you have cheap!
