yeuch... KDE-4 is *not* ready for the general public yet.
(1) Printing functions *very* limited in all applications I've tried
(ocular-based). In fact, printing functions are down-right *wrong*. Try
printing double-sided... you'll get both sides on the same page (page
feeds out, goes back in, and prints on the same side). Try collating...
ditto. Print in reverse? It'll eat your cat. (Ok, I made the last one up).
Works fine with KDE-3 apps. I'm a little surprised and disappointed CUPS
allows this to happen (my CUPS server is on an entirely different
machine).
(2) Desktop keeps flickering all windows (and gadgets) to some weird black
texture, then back, once per second along with the ticking of my desktop
clock... very annoying, and I can't get it to consistently do it at any
given time to trace what's causing it.
(3) The applications are all "clunky" at the moment... they've got to go a
*long* ways before the integration is as smooth as it is in KDE-3. Konsole
is a huge window with large, blocky fonts and no "create new tab" button
(but the functionality is there with the keyboard shortcut). Ocular (kpdf
replacement) displays PDF documents improperly and has very limited print
options that don't work (see (1)). konqueror doesn't support SSL. A click
and drag doesn't exist... the moment you click, something activates... so
file manipulation options via konqueror are borked.
Really, about the only good thing about KDE-4 is that you can show it to
windoze users and brag about how it doesn't seem to work right. OK, not so
good...
I've got some hope that they can make it work over time, but I *really*
don't recommend anyone using it as their main environment at the moment.
On the positive side, they've recently resolved their conflicts with
Qt-4.4 (which brought in phonon, snagged from the KDE-4 project and
integrated into Qt instead).
I'll check back with it around june of '09 (just giving it some time to
smooth the bugs)... until then, I'm not touching it again.
