But more seriously, while probably not the answer you're looking for, I've
chosen to take a very different approach towards printing.
I got myself a networkable laser printer that speaks PostScript. (in my
case, a Samsung CLP-550N) The advantage of this is that you can make it
work in ANY operating system, past, present, or future. You don't need
any weird special drivers at all. In fact, the only "driver" you need is
a platform-indepedent text file (PPD) that tells the OS what the printer
can do. (and as a home user, an office-grade laser printer lasts almost
forever before you ever need to refill the toner)
For the scanner bit, I just have an older HP ScanJet hand-me-down, and its
always worked just fine in Linux.
