two thoughts.
first, they will now have a way to ensure people have access to a good
browser to run their apps.
second... google already has one of the world's largest databases of
what web pages people go to, not only from their own activities but
from their purchase of doubleclick. plus if you actually USE any of
their services (gmail, blogspot/blogger, calendar, etc.) they are able
to easily link that information to your identity, because they use one
single cookie for just about anything. who's to say they won't use
this new browser as a way to gather even more information about what
you're doing online?
as it stands now, they can follow you through their own sites, as well
as any site which contains their ads. using this browser could give
them a list of EVERY web page you visit, along with any and all
personal information you may enter into the browser itself.
i'm not sure they WOULD build something like this into the browser,
i'd like to think their "do no evil" policy extends that far... but
look at microsoft's record, holding this information and transmitting
it back to microsoft in a hidden thread, AND creating back-doors for
government use... i guess it's a good thing it's open source, so
people can inspect the code and you can compile that version yourself
rather than using a binary which might have hidden "features" built
into it.
i really hope i'm worrying about nothing here... but until the code
has been inspected by swarms of people who are smarter than myself, i
don't plan to use it.
WITH ALL THAT SAID.
if you haven't already, take a few minutes and look through their
comic book. if it's an accurate picture of what the new browser will
be like, it sounds pretty darned cool.
