I typically put /swap near the very front of the drive for the above
listed reason IF I do not have a dedicated drive for /swap.

Disk /dev/sda: 300.0 GB, 300069052416 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 36481 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000001

   Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1   *           1        2550    20482843+   c  W95 FAT32 (LBA)
/dev/sda2            2551       36481   272550757+   7  HPFS/NTFS

Disk /dev/sdb: 251.0 GB, 251000193024 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30515 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x000d3430

   Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1   *           1          62      497983+  83  Linux
/dev/sdb2              63         124      498015    5  Extended
/dev/sdb3             125        2556    19535040   83  Linux
/dev/sdb4            2557       30515   224580667+  83  Linux
/dev/sdb5              63         124      497983+  82  Linux swap / Solaris
