Subject: [Leaplist] A frustrating recurring problem

I'm not writing this message on my customary Desk Top Computer.
It's out of commission again, by which I mean, I can't get it to
go online----again.

My wife receives her online functions via being WIRELESSLY
connected to our Linksys Wireless Router. My machine is hard wired to
the Linksys Wireless Routr.
My wife can get online. I can't get online any more.

Back around 10-8-2008 I asked for help here with the problem of being unable
to get online.
Richard Ostrow and John Simpson and Tony Becker helped me get back online.

John advised me to "ping" his computer which might show that I was actually
online.
I pinged his IP address and the "ping" worked fine, showing me that I was
online but didn't realize it.
The "ping" doesn't work today. When I try it a screen error message
appears which reads" "The Network is unreachable."

Back on 10-8-08 John guided me to using this command to restart the Network:
"/etc/init.d./network restart" (No quotation marks used when issuing the
command)

It was a big relief and pleasure to see this command work. It put my
computer back online.
At that point in time I thought this trouble was past history.

But I soon learned that after using the command a few times I could use
Google or
"Send/Receive E-Mail" a few times but then, always, the command had to be
re-issued
or I would again be unable to go online.

When I would call up Google to search for something online, often my
first attempt (using Google) would fail and a screen message would tell
me that I was Off Line. I would then, still in Google, click "File" and see
in the drop-down menu that "Work Offline" was checked. I'd remove the
check mark and Google would then work normally again. If I left Google
and later came back to it, I'd have to uncheck the "Work Offline" box again.

Using E-mail was similarly afflicted. When I called "Evolution" E-Mail
to the screen, the Menu icon "Send/Receive" would be "grayed out." I would
then
click "File" and then click "Work Online" in the drop-down menu--- and the
"Send/Receive" icon would change from grayed out to bold.
Then the E-Mail program would function normally again---for a while.

It's at least mildly frustrating to have to repeat those actions many, many
times,
but it has enabled me to get online satisfactorily for the past 10 days.

For the first half of today, that system enabled me to get online.
BUT, Suddenly, this afternoon, those actions did NOT get my computer
online.

I then went through the routine of removing power from my Road Runner
Modem, removed power from the Linksys Wireless Router and shutting down the
Computer. After a few seconds I'd re-power the Modem and the Router and then
reboot the computer. This has had NO effect on the problem.

Now when I put Evolution E-Mail on the screen, the icon representing
"Send/Receive" is grayed out. When I click "File" ==> "Work Online"
the Menu item "Send/Receive" becomes bold again. But when I click on
"Send/Receive" I get this error message:
    "Error while performing operation
Host lookup failed: pop-server.cfl.rr.com: Temporary failure
    in name resolution"

I am not aware that I'm using a wrong name anywhere in the configuration
screens for "Evolution" E-Mail

I recognize that I've made some inadvertent error but I can't figure out
what I've done wrong.

Thank you for any further help.

William

Have you taken the router out of the picture? (IE removed it and connected
directly to the modem?) to see if A) it might be the router or B) the NIC in
the computer failing?
