Yep.  SQL is one of those areas where Google is seemingly worthless.  I 
am fairly certain you simply need to buy a book or two on relational 
database theory.  Google can hobble you by, but it's hard to find good 
examples of complex queries and why they behave the way they do on the Web.

MySQL has a dubious history of mangling data silently under some 
conditions.  I'd never trust it with my data.  Everyone values their 
data differently, though.
