PostgreSQL has custom data types, a GIS plugin, and has had ACID
compliance, triggers and procedural programming (using a variety of
different embeddable languages) for a lot longer than MySQL.
MySQL's syntax has always seemed a little simpler, primarily when
dealing with strings.

Mostly. PostgreSQL seems to need some extra work with strings, BICBW,
I haven't used it as extensively as MySQL.
