I've had the exact opposite problem with notebooks.
The consumer-graded stuff works _better_ than the professional.
Better support, longer lasting, etc...
My Lenovo Thinkpad T60 is a lemon. One LCD panel has already
self-toasted. Screws have been falling out. Sucker has issues
with both RHEL 5 and Fedora 8-9.
My HP Pavilion dv9000z was virtually flawless, including the
quality of the system, while being a crapload cheaper.
Now I knew the Gateway P-7811FX had "cut corners," but no worse
than some of the Dell high-end laptops that are 60-100% more in
cost (like XPS).
But it's funny that they ship 64-bit Vista, but do not offer
support for it. I still haven't gotten an answer on how to
load firmware updates when it requires 32-bit XP or 32-bit Vista.
And it still doesn't explain Intel's issues either.

I don't have a "favorite Linux distro." I use, develop
and support community efforts, often built around Linux.
Technology and solutions are my focus, not dragging in
assumptions, marketing and other concepts which dominate
non-community developed software, which I left long ago.
