You got so actively side-tracked on the partially unrelated Intel graphics 
chipset rant (the laptop uses nVidia for its GPU), that I think you missed 
the posts where I figured this one out :-)  It was a known issue with the 
wireless chipset driver.  I installed the recommended patch, and it seems to 
have fixed the problem.  Of course that doesn't change my other gripes, but 
at least the laptop stopped locking up.

There's a reason why I flat-out refuse to buy "consumer-grade crap" computer 
hardware when I have a choice.  I got this laptop from the business products 
line.  There have even been times where I preferred to buy old used 
business-grade hardware off eBay, rather than buy brand-new consumer-grade 
hardware.
