Without knowing why, I do know from experience that using .local on a
MS network that also supports Macs will cause many problems with the
Macs. A client of mine upgraded from an NT 4.0 network to a W2K
network and used .local for the inside. The Mac department could no
longer attach to the shared storage. Here is a technet article about it:
