Correct, because console (kernel) framebuffer != X framebuffer.
What you want to _also_ pass (at least in Fedora) is:
xdriver=vesa

For dual-head, all bets are off.
On the nVidia GeForce cards, the framebuffer is _unified_.
So "at best," you'll get a copy with the VESA driver. You
typically have to use the "nvidia" driver to support its
dual-head on the GeForce.
On nVidia Quadra cards, you have the option of _splitting_ the
framebuffer. So standard X could use the framebuffers separate
with the VESA (or other) driver (like "nv") and then use
standard Xinerama to tie them together. That's one of the
feature premiums you get with Quadra.

I don't have a "favorite Linux distro." I use, develop
and support community efforts, often built around Linux.
Technology and solutions are my focus, not dragging in
assumptions, marketing and other concepts which dominate
non-community developed software, which I left long ago.
