[Leaplist] discussion - ways to share/access data

I use multiple computers, and would be interested in various ideas and
viewpoints on storing files (if you use multiple computers to share files).
I'll throw some things out on the table to see what others think.
For starters, I use a small home network, with a small server, and work
primarily on a desktop and a laptop (about 50-50). Other family members
access some of the shared data, as well.
I like to take my /home/user directories, and get as much of the 'data' files
(documents, images, audio, etc.) isolated from the 'config' files as
possible. (facilitates accessing the documents from different machines).
I also like to isolate wip from completed work - the completed work (such as
images, audio files, pdfs, bin files and downloads) get moved to a /share
area
I've tried...
1) sharing a single folder area on the desktop using access with nfs and
automount from the laptop
(nice because there is only one set of files - not so nice when nfs is not
available)
2) duplicating document folders on different pc's with rsync
(nice from the laptop when 'on the road' and nfs isn't available - not so
nice when rsync hasn't run since changes were made - some issues with rsync
when doing house cleaning)
3) ssh and nfs access to /share/docs type of folder
(nice centralized access to completed work - not so nice with wip, and
when i've been delinquent on my 'filing' chores)
So, for those of you who use multiple pc's, what have you found that works
best for accessing your document files?
