"New/innovation" is relative.
I had a customer extolling the virtues of a particular "Enterprise"
distro today as having "better tools" for something. This distro is
based is 3rd hand, based on the "Enterprise" distro I deploy. In other
words, the 3rd hand can focus on working on "cool" stuff build around
the "technical meat" the 1st hand has already done for them.
Of course, when that 3rd hand system was updated, it broke spectacularly
because a core "technical meat" component changed. ;)
I deploy this 1st hand distro not because it's "cool" or allegedly
"innovative." I deploy this 1st hand distro because I mitigate
regressions when things change. While other distros break, quite
spectacularly sometimes, in upgrades because core components they don't
maintain change, this one keeps chugging.
It doesn't have the best installer. It doesn't have the coolest GUI
tools. It doesn't have a lot of frills. And it's definitely not
"sexy." Even more so, it is definitely _not_ about listening to what
everyone "wants." In fact, that's really the key. Because it focuses
on one (1), key, major factor ...
Sustainable
Marketshare today is nothing. Sustainability is everything. The nice
"side bonus" is that this 1st hand distro vendor cranks out the most GPL
while it's at it. Hence why they still employ the most technical
experts in the industry, and make the rules that everyone else follows.
It's not "sexy" innovation, it's "sustainable" innovation. ;)
