There are three folks in the Foundation who have run Linux at home, or
on the work servers, but, I came in and, to them, simply repeated what
they have been thinking all along. Windows installs on computers takes
too long, the returned machines are too many, (users don't update the AV
and Spyware programs!) plus, the installs of drivers has everyone
seeking all over the web.

Whenever a machine is completely done, it is imaged to the server so the
next time it will be simpler to just image that one.

But, with the upgrades of all the third party, and Open Source programs
and apps, the images go a bit stale, and more time is spent updating...

With Linux, the YUM/Kpkg/Apt/ or etc. updates all packages, so none are
skipped over...

We want to speed up our output of systems, have no control over what
comes in the door, and need to provide the apps and programs to meet a
standard.

It looks like they are going to have two Linux images, one for <700MHz
systems, full of games for young children; one for >700MHz systems
for middle an high schoolers, with the more full repertoire of advanced
applications, and games.

The folks are good at turning out systems for kids, with 1200 last year.
This, after diong it for 5 years. It is time to get modern, and also to
speed it up...

Many are engineers, and have run Macs and Linux over the years. The
timing is perfect to send out efficient Linux boxes to students.

I am also doing all the MacIntosh systems that come in the door, and we
all are giving each other ideas and tips all the time. Your ideas are
all forwarded to the group for consideration and discussion.

Thanks!
