[Leaplist] Fedora 9 impressions so far...

I thought Ubuntu 8.04 was still using alsa? Alsa has a known issue with
the sound mixer settings (volume control under gnome) in some Debian
Etch and Ubuntu installs (maybe others...I don't know). The External
amplifier switch is selected by default, which disables sound going to
the computer speakers. It is not, however, displayed in the Switches
tab, so there is no way to know this. In the volume control, select Edit
-> Preferences, select External Amplifier, and close the preferences
box. External amplifier is now displayed under switches, and is checked
(in my case anyway). Uncheck the box next to External Amplifier and you
have audio. This is a 30 second fix that took me a week with Google to
find the answer to.
