With that said, I don't run firewalls on my internal network computers since I
trust the other computers here at home. I rely on the firewall to protect all
of the computers from the internet at large.
This is considered poor form for businesses, but it's a risk I accept at home.
Even without a firewall, Linux is darned hard to break into from a network
connection.
As far as configuring a firewall, it's a well known fact that you need to
forward ports to internal machines if you want the world to be able to get to
that machine.
On my firewall, I forward ports 6881:6999 and 4444 to my Linux desktop for
BitTorrent use. I also forward the ssh port, port 22. I leave these
forwarded, so it's a one time setting.
This allows me to secure shell to my machine from the outside world and it
allows BitTorrents, which I use all the time, to run without being throttled
by the other BitTorrent clients.
Also, if your router and firewall understands uPnP, then there are several
BitTorrent clients that will unlock the firewall for you. My firewall doesn't
and requires manual settings.
