Am I understanding that you can install Linux but it won't go GUI? Why not get
it running CLI and then try to configure X?

My favorite way to configure X is:

1) Run Knoppix to detect the video card
2) Copy xorg.conf to the hard drive
3) Reboot the native distro using the Knoppix xorg
4) Select your monitor to get rid of the flicker

What I've had trouble with is getting Wifi to work, and this new
anti-ndiswrapper religious zealotry isn't helping.
