[Leaplist] Re: [Off-list] Install Fedora Core 8 -- Using (or Removing) LVM ...

Thank you, Mr. Lambert and Mr. Smith, for your thoroughgoing replies to
my Partitioning questions.

Mr. Lambert: I have downloaded "dban" and burned an iso image of it
using K3b and when my machine is booted with the dban Linux Cd in its
drive, the dban program opening screen pops up. I don't dare use it,
tho', since I fear that, unknown to me, I might do something physically
or electronically damaging to my brand new Hard Drive.

Mr. Smith: Trust me, this is not a complaint nor a criticism: I also
tried to find
find each of the URL's you kindly suggested to me.
Before writing for help to the "leap" organization I studied the
Installion Guide for Fedora Core 8 at
http://docs.fedoraproject.org/install-guide/f8/en_US/.
Sections 9.2, 9.3, 9.4 and 9.5 are the most helpful re Custom Partitioning.
For Custom Manual Partitioning those Sections seem to be "top drawer."

Mr. Smith wrote: "Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) release 5 Installation
Guide should match (or be close to) Fedora Core 6 or later:" ---- but it
is not obviously listed any more at the URL you provided. A search at
that same Red Hat Linux website did find the Installation Guide for Red
Hat Linux 7------the earliest Red Hat Linux Installatin Guide Version
which I could find. I reviewed it paying most of my attention to the
"Druid" options. I scanned the "fdisk" instructions also but since the
Red Hat authored information re "fdisk" cautions that only experts
should attempt its use, I bowed out of that discussion after a quick scan.

I did find http://tldp.org/HOWTO/LVM-HOWTO/. I'm not in doubt that it is
a very good resource but time is not permitting me to study it in detail
at this moment.

I din't find this URL either:
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-5-manual/Deployment_G
At each of those URL's which I could not locate a Google search shows
"Page Not Found (404)" Even if I use the search function at the page which
opens, I can't locate the specific topic I'm after. Often it's my
thinking which is faulty, I confess.

Mr. Smith later wrote (his reply is reproduced below):
"Correct. There is likely a "/boot" Primary partition, and then a LVM
Primary Partition. All other "slices" (and filesystems), other than
"/boot", are managed by LVM."

William: That is exactly the case.

Mr. Smith:
"You may need to do the following, in order ...
1. Delete all LVM "slices" (filesystems)
2. Delete the LVM partition
3. Delete all other partitions (e.g., /boot)"

When I boot my New LEK-Built Computer now, since I finally in
desparation used the "Default Partitioning" Installation option, the
Fedora Core 8 Installation Disk program gives me no freedom to follow
your adivce, just listed above.

Mr. Smith:
"For #1, hit the "LVM" button which will let you edit the LVM slices."

William: I can no longer "see" the LVM button even when I try to run the
Fedora Core 8 Install Disk again.

Mr. Smith, would you consider using the "dban" program to erase the Hard
Drive thus permitting me to start all over?

I apologize to all for this lengthy communication.

Mr. Lambert suggested that I would benefit from attending the InstallFest
meeting in Winter Park tomorrow. I plan to be there for the first time.
I don't know how much of my hardware needs to be brought to the meeting
so I'll bring all of its components.

Many thanks everyone,

William
