Three problems with this approach:

1. I'm still stuck in a Windoze environment at present (still having a 
challenge getting Samba to work).

2. You presume far too much on my available time and programming skills.

3. I have no clue what command the HP5550 needs to receive in order to 
print sideways from it's present behavior.

This last is really the crux of the issue, all else I can do with OOo.

But I will keep this option on hand in case I fin answers to all three.
