Fair question. My answers, in addition to those already offered:

Because some folks don't want to read the main list, but still want 
meeting announcements.

Because some folks get the main list in digest form, and might miss the 
meeting announcements if they were in with the rest.

Because as Linux folks, we're accustomed to the a la carte method of 
doing things; including only those specific components we really want.


However, if you have some ideas about how to promote our activities, 
please do share them, as our recruitment program is pretty anemic.
