playing the devils advocate on this one. unless you program the
application that creates the data, it is not your data. just being an
ass on that point. now the difference with MS product lock in vs FOSS
is that the license are different and thus allow you to do things each
to their own.
the MS license gives you use, but you are screwed when MS chooses to
change things without providing legacy maintenance.
with FOSS you can choose to keep the older code and the older "data"
created with that code and not be as locked into a corp. desire to
change things to make money by forcing users to upgrade.
