I agree with both Fred and Raymond, learn the basics before trying
customized installs. Shortly after I installed Debian the first time, as
a newbie, I re-compiled the kernel. I'm not quite sure what I did, but
the system did continue to run afterwards. Point is, it was useless as a
training move because I still didn't know the basics, and I definitely
don't know what I did.
While Debian might not be as easy to install as others, I don't find it
difficult. If you use the Net Install (the only install I do unless I am
without Internet) and follow the default suggestions for the things you
don't understand, I believe you will have a successful installation. And
afterwards, you will end up with a very stable distribution. One
question though; are you planning on doing this install as a dual boot
with an existing XP installation?
